about

FFENSYS was born out of an idea and the attempt to disconnect myself from the sometimes overly self-conscious mindset of music making. The name fences came to me whilst I was putting up a fence.. it can be a fairly mundane task so I began to question what fences are for.

I started to think of them as these blocking devices that stop our interaction with the outside environment and whether this is a good or bad thing, whether fences are natural and if not why do we as humans try to manipulate our environment and put as much distance in the way of us and nature.

It was the thought that our minds always know what is best for us but it is kept relatively secret and well-hidden from the forefront of our minds due to the needs of wanting to be accepted and the fear of rejection.
Whilst making these recordings there were so many limitations that I wasn't used to but this helped me focus on the important aspects of pieces.

I'm not saying I achieved my goal fully on this collection but I feel some decent steps forward in the right direction were made.

All of the pieces were recorded in one take using either a Boss RC20xl a Line 6 DL4 or both, sometimes even the iPhone Loopy app, trying to distance myself from a DAW as much as I could.

I hope this connects with you in one way or another.

thanks,
Mathew Keightley.
